Gris

Biography

Gris is a Québécois black metal duo from Quebec City, formed in 2004 under the name *Niflheim* by guitarist and bassist Neptune and vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Icare, who was credited as Orion on the earliest recordings. Their first album, 'Neurasthénie', was released by #Sepulchral Productions# in 2006 and reissued under the new name Gris. The debut proper, 'Il était une forêt...', followed in 2007, setting tortured vocals and long, funereal songs alongside acoustic guitar, piano and violin. Six years later the duo released the double album 'À l'âme enflammée, l'äme constellée...' in 2013, an eighty-minute work that widened the sound with folk and classical passages and confirmed Gris as a leading name in Quebec's atmospheric black metal underground, known locally as the métal noir québécois scene. No third studio album has appeared, although Icare and Neptune returned in 2023 with *Miserere Luminis*, their collaborative project with Annatar of *Sombres Forêts*, releasing its second album, 'Ordalie'.
