Biography
Boston indie rock band Helium formed in the summer of 1992 around singer, guitarist and songwriter Mary Timony, with Shawn King Devlin on drums and Brian Dunton, then Ash Bowie, on bass. On #Matador Records# they moved from the snarling feminist rock of the 'Pirate Prude' EP (1994) and 'The Dirt of Luck' (1995) toward the keyboard-rich, mystical prog-pop of 'The Magic City' (1997). Timony's experimental guitar playing and monotone vocals made Helium one of the most distinctive American indie bands of the 1990s before their 1998 split.
