Jaki Liebezeit

Jaki Liebezeit

Jaki Liebezeit was a German drummer, celebrated as a founding member of the experimental rock band Can. [1, 8] Initially a free jazz musician, he shifted his focus to develop a uniquely precise and influential drumming style, often described as half-man, half-machine. [1, 3] This metronomic, trance-inducing approach, which he evolved away from American blues and rock conventions, became known as the "motorik" beat. [1, 5, 13] His minimalist, cyclical rhythms provided the framework for Can's improvisations and profoundly shaped post-punk, electronic, and alternative music. [2, 9] After Can, he continued to collaborate widely with artists like Brian Eno and Jah Wobble. [1, 2]
