Biography
Georgia-born Jesse Fuller spent half his life in manual work before turning professional in Oakland in the early 1950s, performing as a complete one-man band. Singing over twelve-string guitar, harmonica and kazoo, he played bass lines on the fotdella, the foot-operated instrument he invented, through a repertoire of blues, ragtime and spirituals. His own 'San Francisco Bay Blues' and 'Beat It on Down the Line' entered the standard folk-revival repertoire, covered by *Janis Joplin* and the *Grateful Dead* among many others before his death in Oakland in 1976.
