Biography
Julius Eastman was an American minimalist composer from Ithaca, New York, whose accumulating piano works 'Stay On It' (1973), 'Femenine' (1974) and the defiant 'Gay Guerrilla' (1979) made him a downtown New York original. Forgotten at his death in 1990, he has since been restored to the centre of minimalism. He was also a remarkable performer, singing in works by *Meredith Monk* and playing in *Peter Maxwell Davies*'s 'Eight Songs for a Mad King', and his archive has driven a major scholarly revival.
