Biography
Khan Jamal (1946–2022) was a Philadelphia vibraphonist and a key figure in the city's spiritual and free jazz scenes. He founded the collective *Sounds of Liberation* in 1970 and led his own groups from 'Drum Dance to the Motherland' (1973) onwards, adding marimba and the West African balafon to his armoury. His albums for #SteepleChase# and his work with *Byard Lancaster* and *Sunny Murray* mark him as one of the vibraphone's great unsung modernists.
