Born to Indian immigrants, Thayil was a key architect of the 'grunge' movement, pioneering what became known as the "Seattle Sound" with his unique guitar work. His style is characterized by heavy, detuned riffing inspired by *Black Sabbath*, unorthodox tunings, and a creative use of feedback and experimental noise, which set Soundgarden apart from its peers.
