Biography
Mark Stewart, born in Bristol on 28 April 1960 and died on 21 April 2023, was the towering frontman of The Pop Group, the Bristol band whose dub soaked post-punk debut 'Y' from 1979 remains a landmark of political music. After the band split in 1981 he became a key voice of the #On-U Sound# and #Mute# rosters, first with the New Age Steppers and then as a solo artist backed by The Maffia, cutting records such as 'Learning to Cope With Cowardice' and 'Metatron' that collided reggae, hip hop, industrial noise and uncompromising polemic, before reuniting The Pop Group in 2010.
