Biography

American free jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist, also a painter and recording engineer. Marzette Watts came to music after activism in Alabama and art studies in Paris, settling in New York, where his loft hosted many of the free jazz generation. He made only two albums as a leader: 'Marzette Watts and Company' (recorded 1966, for #ESP-Disk#) and 'The Marzette Watts Ensemble' (recorded 1968, for #Savoy Records#). Both are now regarded as documents of the 1960s avant-garde, after which Watts concentrated on film, engineering and teaching.
