Biography
Bill Dixon was a seminal American figure in the free jazz and avant-garde movements, known for his work as a trumpeter, composer, educator, and organizer. A master of texture and space, he utilized his trumpet, flugelhorn, and piano to create slowly evolving soundscapes, often employing electronic effects and unconventional techniques. He was a pivotal organizer of the 1964 'October Revolution in Jazz' festival, which led to the formation of the Jazz Composers Guild. His 1967 album for #RCA Victor#, 'Intents and Purposes', is a landmark recording. Dixon was also a dedicated educator, founding the Black Music Division at Bennington College, where he taught from 1968 to 1995.
