Biography
American composer born in St. Louis in 1957, a central figure of totalism, the rhythmically intricate offshoot of minimalism. Rouse began with the band *Tirez Tirez* and the ensemble Mikel Rouse Broken Consort, then turned to song-driven contemporary opera, writing and starring in 'Failing Kansas' and 'Dennis Cleveland'. His counterpoetry technique sets layered spoken voices against complex repeating rhythms, and he remains active as a composer and performer.
