Biography
The New York Art Quartet was a free jazz group formed in New York City in 1964 by alto saxophonist John Tchicai and trombonist Roswell Rudd, with Milford Graves on drums and, initially, Lewis Worrell on bass. A product of the October Revolution in Jazz moment, the quartet recorded two albums, 'New York Art Quartet' for #ESP-Disk# and 'Mohawk', before splitting in 1966. Briefly reunited in 1999, the group is now regarded as one of the most powerful ensembles of the free jazz underground.
