Biography

Milford Graves was a revolutionary American drummer, percussionist, and polymath recognized as a pioneering force in free jazz. He liberated the drums from a traditional timekeeping role, transforming them into a lead melodic and textural voice. His highly influential, polyrhythmic style incorporated African and Indian drumming traditions. Beyond music, Graves was a professor, researcher, martial artist, and herbalist who explored the relationship between rhythm, the human body, and healing. His interdisciplinary work included studying cardiac rhythms to inform his music and inventing his own martial art, Yara. Key collaborations include work with *Albert Ayler*, *Paul Bley*, and the *New York Art Quartet*.
