Oscar Brown Jr. was a Chicago singer, lyricist and playwright (1926–2005) whose 'Sin & Soul' (1960) pioneered a conversational, lyric-driven vocal jazz. Writer of 'Dat Dere', 'Work Song' and 'The Snake', he moved between recording, musical theatre and community activism, mentoring generations of Chicago performers across a career that lasted until his death.
