Papangu

Biography

Papangu is an avant-garde metal band from João Pessoa, Brazil, formed in 2012. The band's name refers to a masked character from the carnival in Pernambuco. Their sound is a complex and eclectic fusion, blending sludge metal, progressive rock, and zeuhl with traditional Northeastern Brazilian music styles like forró and maracatu. Their critically acclaimed debut album, 'Holoceno' (2021), was a concept album inspired by ecological eschatology and Brazilian literature. The follow-up, 'Lampião Rei' (2024), delved into the story of the folk hero Lampião, further cementing their reputation for creating dense, narrative-driven music that defies easy categorization.
