American singer-songwriter and pianist (1929–2000) famed for his own song 'I Put a Spell on You' (1956), delivered with operatic shouting and gothic stage theatrics that made him a pioneer of shock rock. A former pianist for *Tiny Grimes* who had hoped to sing opera, Hawkins recorded blues, rhythm and blues and rock and roll for five decades and later acted in 'Mystery Train'.
