Biography
Sonny Sharrock was a pioneering American free-jazz guitarist renowned for his explosive, horn-like attack and textural approach to the instrument. Initially inspired by saxophonists like *John Coltrane*, Sharrock translated their 'sheets of sound' to the guitar, using heavy distortion, feedback, and slide to create a visceral and cathartic style. After early work with *Pharoah Sanders* and *Herbie Mann*, he released seminal albums like 'Black Woman' and 'Monkey-Pockie-Boo'. He co-founded the influential avant-garde supergroup *Last Exit* with *Bill Laswell*, *Peter Brötzmann*, and *Ronald Shannon Jackson*. His final masterpiece, 'Ask the Ages', released on #Axiom#, is considered a landmark of his career.
