Sun Ra Arkestra

The Sun Ra Arkestra is a pioneering American jazz ensemble known for its cosmic philosophy, theatrical performances, and vast musical scope. Formed by the enigmatic Sun Ra in Chicago during the mid-1950s, the group is a foundational force in Afrofuturism. Their sound traverses the entire history of jazz, from ragtime and swing to bebop, free jazz, and fusion, while also being early adopters of electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Characterized by elaborate, space-themed costumes and an ever-evolving lineup, the Arkestra has operated as a communal organization for decades. After Sun Ra's death in 1993, the ensemble continued under the leadership of saxophonist *John Gilmore* and, since 1995, under saxophonist Marshall Allen.
