Biography

The Weavers were a New York folk quartet formed in 1948 by Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays, Pete Seeger and Fred Hellerman. Their harmonised versions of traditional songs, labour ballads and *Lead Belly*'s 'Goodnight, Irene' made them the first commercially successful folk group in the United States. Blacklisted in the 1950s, they reunited at Carnegie Hall in 1955 and continued, with Erik Darling replacing Seeger, until 1964.
