Part of his massive archival series, this double-disc set focuses specifically on the original Mothers of Invention lineup and a later 1982 ensemble. The first disc highlights raw 1960s performances featuring field recordings and avant-garde theatricality, while the second disc boasts the razor-sharp technical precision of his 80s band. The compilation beautifully contrasts his early conceptual dadaism with his later, hyper-complex jazz-rock compositions.
