Backwash
by Talulah Gosh
Compiling the entirety of the Oxford quintet's brief, frenetic 1980s recording career, 'Backwash' is an absolute cornerstone of the British twee-pop and C86 movements. The band aggressively paired 1960s girl-group melodies and innocent, lovelorn lyricism with the breakneck speed and amateurish buzzsaw guitars of early punk rock. Despite dissolving before recording a formal debut album, their hyper-melodic, DIY approach profoundly influenced the subsequent generation of indie-pop.
