Jar of Flies
by Alice in Chains
Expanding on the acoustic-based sound of their 'Sap' EP, 'Jar of Flies' was self-produced and spontaneously written and recorded in one week, utilizing primarily analog techniques to create its warm, intimate atmosphere. The recording features layered, melancholy guitar work, intricate vocal harmonies between Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell, and explores bleak, introspective themes of isolation, loneliness, and consequence. This fusion of poignant songwriting and nuanced performance resulted in the record becoming the first EP in history to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
