Maruja EP

Album Notes & Community Reviews

Maruja's 2016 debut EP is a raw, formative document, capturing the Manchester quartet’s nascent energy within a distinctly post-punk and new wave framework. Propelled by taut, motorik basslines and interlocking, angular guitar riffs, the recording’s stark production amplifies its claustrophobic atmosphere. Vocalist Harry Wilkinson’s delivery shifts from anxious declamation to melodic brooding, articulating themes of urban paranoia and systemic disillusionment. While lacking the saxophone-led experimentalism of their later output, this initial offering establishes the foundational rhythmic tension and confrontational spirit that would define their trajectory.
