This EP was recorded secretly to circumvent interference from the band's label at the time, TVT Records, with its creation fueled by Trent Reznor's professional frustrations. It represents a significant sonic shift from its predecessor, embracing a much heavier, guitar-driven, and abrasive industrial metal sound. The release was notoriously accompanied by a controversial and largely suppressed short film.
