Album Notes & Community Reviews
Injecting the blistering pace of 1970s British punk rock with irresistible, radio-friendly hooks, Pete Shelley essentially birthed the pop-punk genre with this classic single. Inspired by a line of dialogue from the musical 'Guys and Dolls', Shelley consciously wrote the lyrics with gender-neutral pronouns to reflect his own bisexuality while ensuring universal relatability. Its soaring chorus completely transcended the aggressively anti-commercial roots of the punk movement.
