Album Notes & Community Reviews

Originally written by Martin Gore as a slow, acoustic ballad, bandmate Alan Wilder envisioned the track as an upbeat, bass-heavy dance floor anthem. Accompanied by a distinctive, twangy guitar riff and Dave Gahan's commanding vocal delivery, it strikes a balance between bleak introspection and stadium-sized catharsis. It won the Brit Award for Best British Single and remains Depeche Mode's signature song.
