On Melancholy Hill

On Melancholy Hill cover art

Originally conceived by Damon Albarn during the sessions for 'The Good, the Bad & the Queen', the track was repurposed for Gorillaz due to its incredibly buoyant, pop-oriented melody. The song juxtaposes a bright, shimmering synthesizer lead against Albarn's weary, lethargic vocal delivery, perfectly capturing the nautical, sun-drenched sadness central to the 'Plastic Beach' concept album.
