Constructed as an eight-minute, deadpan monologue delivered over a relentlessly steady, analog synth groove, the song hilariously chronicles the anxieties of an aging music snob losing cultural relevance. James Murphy name-drops a dizzying array of obscure bands and underground movements, perfectly satirizing DJ culture and hipster pretension. The debut single established DFA Records as a central force in the 2000s dance-punk movement.
