March of the Pigs

Clocking in at barely three minutes, this track is an assault of incredibly fast, punishing drum programming and violently distorted guitars. Its defining characteristic is its highly unusual, stuttering time signature, punctuated by brief, sudden breaks featuring only piano and a whispered vocal line. This extreme juxtaposition of abrasive metal and stark quietude demonstrated Trent Reznor's masterful control over sonic tension.
