A stark, unromanticized depiction of traveling to Harlem to purchase heroin, propelled by a relentless, primitive rock rhythm. Lou Reed's deadpan, street-level narrative completely avoided the moralizing or psychedelic glorification of drugs prevalent in late-60s rock. Maureen Tucker's pounding, minimalist drum beat and John Cale's pounding piano chords laid essential groundwork for the impending punk rock movement.
