Burning Spear's 'Marcus Garvey' is a cornerstone of roots reggae, delivering potent lyrical themes of Black consciousness, history, and Rastafarian faith centered on the teachings of the Jamaican National Hero. Led by Winston Rodney's incantatory vocals, the album's deep, hypnotic grooves are powered by the all-star backing band, the Black Disciples, and enriched by a full horn section and the atmospheric production of Jack Ruby. The original Jamaican mix possessed a raw, haunting quality that was later polished by Island Records for international release, a modification that created a more commercially palatable sound but controversially altered the producer's initial vision.
