Based on his own acclaimed stage play inspired by John Gay's 'The Beggar's Opera' and Bertolt Brecht's 'The Threepenny Opera', '脫pera do malandro' is a theatrical masterpiece of Brazilian music. Buarque brilliantly utilizes samba and MPB to satirize the hypocrisy of the Brazilian elite and the romanticization of the 'malandro' archetype against the backdrop of the 1940s Estado Novo dictatorship.
