Breaking from their established tradition of internal lyric writing, the duo enlisted vocal contributions from several prominent figures in the Norwegian extreme metal scene, including Ihsahn and Garm. The musical direction shifts noticeably towards their primitive, speed-driven thrash roots while still maintaining the bleak, freezing atmosphere of their earlier black metal classics. The recording signals the beginning of the band's extended departure from the highly influential Peaceville aesthetic.
