This album is defined by its stunning, 18-minute centerpiece, 'Tanya.' The Donald Byrd composition moves beyond bebop forms into a more patient, expansive modal territory, giving Dexter Gordon an enormous canvas on which to paint one of his most celebrated solos. The session is also notable for featuring the astonishing debut of 18-year-old Danish bass virtuoso Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.
