Album Notes & Community Reviews

Building heavily on his earlier pioneering work with Chano Pozo, 'Afro' features Dizzy Gillespie arranging a suite of Latin-infused big band compositions. Arranged largely by Chico O'Farrill, the sessions integrate complex bebop harmonies with authentic Caribbean percussion frameworks. It remains a definitive statement in the evolution of Afro-Cuban jazz as a sophisticated, standalone orchestral form.
