Biography
Dizzy Gillespie was a principal architect of bebop and modern jazz, celebrated for his virtuosic trumpet playing, sophisticated harmonic knowledge, and boundless innovation. His fiery, complex improvisations built upon the style of his idol *Roy Eldridge*, and his on-stage showmanship, iconic bent trumpet, and ballooning cheeks made him an enduring cultural figure. Alongside *Charlie Parker*, he spearheaded the bebop revolution in the 1940s. A restless creator, Gillespie was also a pioneer of Afro-Cuban jazz, famously collaborating with percussionist *Chano Pozo* on classics like 'Manteca' and 'A Night in Tunisia', forever changing the rhythmic landscape of jazz. He recorded for seminal labels like #Savoy#, #Verve#, and #Pablo#.
