Ellington at Newport
by Duke Ellington
'Ellington at Newport' documents the legendary 1956 Newport Jazz Festival performance that single-handedly revitalized Duke Ellington's career, which had been in a commercial lull. The album is famed for the sheer energy of the orchestra and, most notably, for tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves's galvanic 27-chorus solo on "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue," a moment that drove the live audience into a frenzy. Though immortalizing a pivotal event in jazz history, the original LP release was a composite, combining genuine concert recordings with studio-recreated sections to amend audio issues and perceived performance imperfections from the live set.
