Johnny Hodges

An American alto saxophonist, best known for his solo work with Duke Ellington's big band. He was considered, along with Benny Carter, one of the definitive alto saxophone players of the big band era. Renowned for the beauty of his tone and mastery of ballads, his playing had a unique, lyrical quality that was influential and often described as bringing tears to the eyes. He was a major part of Duke Ellington's orchestra for many years and also had a successful career leading his own groups.
