Biography
Johnny Hodges was an American alto saxophonist, celebrated for possessing one of the most beautiful and recognizable tones in jazz. As a pivotal soloist in *Duke Ellington*'s orchestra for nearly four decades, his luscious, lyrical style on ballads and his authoritative swing on blues numbers became a signature element of the Ellington sound. Mentored by *Sidney Bechet*, Hodges' mastery of vibrato and glissando was unparalleled. He also led his own successful small groups, particularly during a period away from Ellington in the early 1950s, recording for labels like #Norgran# and #Verve# and releasing notable albums such as 'Castle Rock' and 'Everybody Knows Johnny Hodges'.
