Biography
Paul Gonsalves was the tenor saxophonist of the *Duke Ellington* Orchestra from 1950 until his death, after earlier chairs with *Count Basie* and *Dizzy Gillespie*. His legendary twenty-seven-chorus solo on 'Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue' at Newport in 1956 revived Ellington's career and remains one of jazz's most famous performances. He died in London in 1974. Ellington never again found a tenor soloist quite like him.
