A perfect snapshot of the evolution of the Blue Note sound. On the surface, this is a classic hard bop blowing session featuring the fiery trumpet of Lee Morgan and Mobley's lyrical tenor. But the secret ingredient is pianist Andrew Hill, whose dissonant, spiky, and unpredictable comping and soloing push the boundaries of the form. This tension between the 'inside' hard bop of the horns and Hill's 'outside' modernism makes the session a fascinating and essential post-bop document.
