Biography
Philadelphia trumpeter, a *Jazz Messengers* alumnus whose #Blue Note Records# album 'The Sidewinder' (1964) produced a crossover hit. His leader dates for the label define hard bop trumpet; he was killed in New York in 1972, aged 33. A prodigy who made his leader debut at eighteen, Morgan fused Clifford Brown's lyricism with a harder, blues-drenched attack, and his late-1960s records show him pushing toward modal and avant-garde territory.
