Album Notes & Community Reviews

Recorded in 1964 but held back for three years, this session captures the alto saxophonist confidently straddling the line between gritty hard bop and the emerging avant-garde. Propelled by the phenomenally fiery drumming of Billy Higgins and featuring trumpeter Charles Tolliver, the record is tense, angular, and relentlessly aggressive. It is a highly respected highlight of McLean's deeply exploratory mid-60s output.
