Album Notes & Community Reviews
Anchored by the brooding, rhythmic piano style of Mal Waldron, 'One-Upmanship' captures an acoustic quintet operating at the height of their post-bop prowess. The session notably features the dual horn frontline of Manfred Schoof and Steve Lacy, whose intertwined improvisations provide a sharp, dynamic contrast to Waldron's dark chordal vamps. Recorded in Munich, the album highlights a telepathic interplay and rigorous dedication to open-ended melodic exploration.
