Replica
by Oneohtrix Point Never
On 'Replica', Oneohtrix Point Never pivots from synthesizer-based compositions to a plunderphonics and sampledelia style, constructing tracks almost entirely from the audio of 1980s and 1990s television commercials. Daniel Lopatin, in his first studio-recorded album, deconstructs these advertisements into fragmented vocal hooks, incidental noises, and looping melodic phrases. The result is an electronic song cycle that arranges the sonic detritus of consumer culture into rhythmic, hypnotic vignettes that explore themes of memory, nostalgia, and the imperfect nature of copies.
