On 'Lazy Afternoon,' drummer and leader Pete La Roca's playing is a model of restraint and musicality, using cymbals and subtle textures to create a hypnotic pulse. Joe Henderson's tenor solo is a searching, lyrical exploration that perfectly fits the track's introspective quality. The album as a whole is a high point of the mid-60s post-bop aesthetic.
