With Robert Wyatt having officially departed, Soft Machine completely severed their ties to eccentric pop structures and fully embraced highly abstract jazz fusion. 'Fifth' is a wonderfully mysterious, fiercely complex instrumental album, driven by Elton Dean's intense saxophone work and deeply atmospheric, highly progressive avant-garde improvisations.
