Biography
Hugh Hopper was a Whitstable-born bassist and composer (1945–2009), a founder of the Canterbury scene whose fuzz bass and tape loops powered *Soft Machine* from 'Volume Two' to 'Fifth'. His solo album '1984' pioneered loop-based composition in Britain, and he remained active for decades in *Soft Heap*, *Brainville* and *Soft Machine Legacy*. His archive recordings continue to be issued, documenting one of British jazz-rock's most original musical minds.
