Signaling the complete abandonment of pop song structures and the final appearance of founding drummer Robert Wyatt, Soft Machine moved entirely into fiercely complex, purely instrumental jazz-rock. 'Fourth' is an incredibly technical, wonderfully progressive Canterbury Scene document, dominated by highly mysterious, deeply suspenseful avant-garde improvisations and a heavy reliance on wind instrumentation.
