'Phaedra' inaugurated Tangerine Dream's classic international era by establishing their sequencer-driven sound, a cornerstone of the Berlin School electronic genre. Built upon the interlocking rhythms of the Moog synthesizer, the album's soundscapes range from the epic, atmospheric title track to Edgar Froese's Mellotron-led "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares." The album's innovative use of nascent synthesizer technology, including happy accidents like oscillators detuning from heat, defined its unique character and marked the band's commercial breakthrough on the Virgin label.
