Splitting the album into an upbeat, rock-oriented A-side and a melancholic, ballad-heavy B-side, Brian Wilson began his shift toward complex studio orchestration. The incorporation of harpsichords, vibraphones, and intricate vocal layering moved the band away from their early surf-pop formula.
